My First Impromptu Mailbag
The Last Article Created Some Interesting Feedback, So I Decided To Answer A Few Of The Comments and Questions
Greetings everyone, I trust that you all had an enjoyable time watching the NBA Summer League over the past ten days. I would like to extend congratulations to the Cleveland Cavaliers on their impressive victory in the championship game on Monday evening.
In light of the numerous emails, texts, and DM's that I have received regarding my last article, its relevance, and the methodology used to calculate it, I have decided to provide some answers to the frequently asked questions.
Why Is There A Name Change And The Meaning?
Within the realm of professional basketball, there exists a multitude of intriguingly named metrics that are utilized to measure various aspects of the game. These metrics include LEBRON, CARMELO, DARKO, and RAPTOR, among others. Recently, a new metric known as THOMPSON was introduced, and its origins were discussed.
However, upon further reflection and consideration, it has been transformed into a new metric known as DIOP. The name DIOP is derived from two professional basketball players, former NBA Center DeSagana Diop, and current Phoenix Suns forward Keita Bates-Diop. It should be noted that the meaning of the DIOP metric has been altered from its original form.
D- Defensive
I- Impact
O- Optimization and
P- Performance
The aforementioned statistic is a comprehensive amalgamation of several defensive statistics, which serves the purpose of simplifying the analysis of defensive metrics for fans. It proves to be particularly beneficial for individuals who wish to delve deeper into data-driven analysis.
Why Is Ja Morant Ranked 4th Overall On The List?
Recently, I've received numerous inquiries regarding Ja Morant's basketball proficiency, particularly in relation to his performance on the court. Although Morant is predominantly recognized for his impressive offensive skills, he has also established himself as a formidable two-way player. In a previous article, I delved into Morant's diligent efforts to enhance his defensive capabilities. When pitted against an opponent, he has the ability to restrict them to only a 37.6% shooting accuracy.
Furthermore, Morant placed second in the league in fewest Points Per Shot and fourth in fewest points per possession among all guards in the league. While it is true that three other starters also boasted high rankings in the DIOP metric, Morant's defensive isolation abilities were unparalleled when given the opportunity. All of these indications indicate that Morant is an asset to his team, not just for his defensive contribution as a whole, but also for his individual defensive aptitude.
As we move further into the summer season, I will be taking on more mailbags that pertain not just to DIOP metrics but also to any topics that you would like for me to explore, examine, and explicate.
